Zoo keepers are responsible for the care, management and welfare of animals in zoos, safari parks and specialised collections feeding.
Keepers work under the supervision of a head keeper or curator, and often work with a particular species of animal or in to ensure the safety of visitors to the zoo, keepers regularly check fences and barriers for signs of wear or damage.
Some zoo keepers are involved in conservation or breeding programmes, and in transferring animals to other zoos for breeding. Zoo keepers work a five to six day week. system.
Zookeepers may work indoors or outside, depending on the type of animals, a driving licence is essential for work in safari parks.
Keepers work at zoos, safari, wildlife parks, bird collections and aquariums, run by zoological societies, charitable trusts, local authorities and private businesses.
In larger zoos there are prospects for promotion from keeper to head keeper. in smaller zoos, and finding more responsible work may mean moving to another zoo, areas of work such as working for the RSPCA, or in kennels or stables.
There may be opportunities to work abroad as some zoos take part in keeper exchange programmes.
