Wardens look after and maintain areas of the countryside as do countryside rangers such as woods, common land and national parks. planning and creating habitats to encourage wildlife and flora practical tasks like tree planting, pond management and bracken control ensuring footpaths, bridleways and waterways comply with health and safety recommendations.

conducting field surveys to detect environmental change, providing guided walks and participating in community projects.
working with volunteers to promote understanding of the environment, liaising with local landowners and businesses whose activities may impact on the environment; budget management, keeping records and writing reports.

Wardens and rangers usually work 37.5 hours a week, which may involve nights and weekends. Part-time and seasonal work are common in visitors centres, Most rangers/wardens wear a uniform. A driving licence is essential.

Most countryside rangers and wardens work in the public sector the main employers are local authority countryside, leisure or recreation departments. The Forestry Commission also employs about 300 wildlife rangers.

Voluntary sector organisations such as the National Trust, RSPB, local wildlife trusts and private landowners, employ small numbers of site managers and wardens.

Full-time paid posts are rare warden. Most voluntary sector organisations offer less structured career prospects.
Rangers and wardens can become countryside or conservation officers. Income for countryside rangers and wardens varies considerably with different employers. (Permalink)
