Sports coaches work with people with a wide range of sporting ability, from absolute beginners to top international professionals, in both individual and team sports.
Most coaches are volunteers, and coach alongside another full-time job.
Only a few coach full-time.
For team sports, they also need to develop players into an effective team.
Coaches, instructors usually work evenings and weekends, when most people participate in recreation.
Those who coach, instruct sport have to be present at training sessions and competitions, resulting in long working hours.
The work environment varies according to what type of sport or activity they coach, instruct.
Some coaches spend most of their time outside working in all weathers.
Professional sports such as football and cricket have traditionally had full-time coaching opportunities, but these have now extended to other areas including horse riding, ice-skating, golf, swimming, tennis, water sports, health and fitness.Full-time positions for coaching professionals can be scarce and competition fierce.
Some coaches, instructors are qualified youth and community workers.
Others are qualified physical education teachers.
Most coaches work part-time in a voluntary capacity.
Some are hired on an hourly basis by clubs and sports centres.
Part-time rates vary depending on how many people are being coached and at what level.
