Psychologists use scientific methods to record behaviour.
clinical psychologists work with people who have a wide range of mental health
problems.
educational psychologists work with children and young people experiencing
problems in education.
occupational psychologists aim to help businesses improve performance and
increase the job satisfaction of staff.
forensic psychologists or criminological psychologists apply psychological
theory to criminal investigations.
health psychologists are concerned with public health.
counselling psychologists help people resolve their problems and make decisions
for themselves, particularly at stressful times of their lives For example,
child psychologists initially train as clinical psychologists or counselling
psychologists specialising in children.
Alternatively they train in educational psychology and work with children in
education.
Working hours depend on duties and the type of psychology practised.
Many psychologists work normal office hours, but some also work evenings.
Psychologists may work in hospitals, clinics, recreational exercise settings,
schools, businesses and prisons.
Local authorities employ psychologists mainly in education or social services
departments, working in child guidance and community homes.
The Civil Service employs psychologists in the Home Office, Prison Service,
Department for Education and Ministry of Defence.
Psychologists in the private sector work in human resources management, private
practice, market research or freelance consultancy.
Promotion prospects are good for chartered psychologists.
For more experienced psychologists, salaries can range between 22,500 and 36,000
a year.

The Parole Board working with others to protect the public 2008-02-22: Psychologist Part time independent members play a vital role in bringing the voice of the public to the Parole Board and we do our best to ensure that the Parole Board reflects society. Please note that we are not looking to recruit part time independent or probation members in this campaign. Secretariat staff, Independent members sit mainly on panels considering parole applications for determinate sentence prisoners (DCR panels) and those considering recalls, but can eventually expect to sit on oral hearings. In recall cases, the dossiers are sent to panel members a week in advance and each member prepares typed draft reasons for 10 cases. You can read about the particular time commitments required by Parole Board members in the relevant person specifications. Our members come from many backgrounds and professions. Secretariat staff, The Board currently employs around 82 secretariat staff who support its work. The objectives of the Parole Board's recruitment policy are: Please note that we are not looking to recruit part time independent or probation members in this campaign. Independent members come from all walks of life and bring a diverse and rich element to the Parole Board. The work is fee based.
