Petrol service sales assistants, or forecourt assistants, spend most of their time at a cash desk dealing with sales transactions and working a console which dispenses petrol from the forecourt.
The work includes operating a till and handling payments by cash, cheque and credit card.
Assistants also answer customers' queries and give directions to motorists.
They may also be involved in other aspects of the retail side of the business, including displaying stock, stocktaking, keeping service areas clean and tidy and receiving deliveries.
In petrol stations with attended service, assistants may refill customers cars, but this is becoming increasingly rare.
Petrol service stations have long opening hours, with many being open 24 hours, so shifts, including some nights, weekends and bank holidays, are usual.
Part-time work is common.
Staff turnover tends to be high, so there are regular vacancies.
An assistant can earn more money for working shifts and overtime. A petrol sales assistant working a 39 hour week earns around 10,000 to 12,000 a year. (Permalink)
