Packers put products into packaging either by hand, or in the case of heavy goods such as washing machines or vehicle engines, use lifting gear and a range of hand and power tools.
In some cases the packer will assemble the cartons, shrink-wrap goods, weigh products and label the packaging to preserve perishable goods.
Some packers work at a conveyor belt; others may operate machines that do the packing work, loading the machine with raw materials, boxes and labels.
A wide range of materials is used, including paper, board, bubble wrap, polystyrene chips, plastic film, glass, tin plate, aluminium foil, textiles and wood.
Part-time work is common and there may be overtime.
Factories throughout the UK employ packers.
Many other organisations also employ packers, including mail order companies, warehouse and storage companies, shipping and forwarding agents, large retailers, removals firms, and companies specialising in exporting goods.
Packers may progress to supervisor or chargehand.
Salary rates for packers vary considerably depending on the industry, and the speed and experience of the job holder. Some packers are paid piece-rates while others receive a basic salary.
