Local government clerical workers, or administrative assistants, assist
administrators by undertaking the more routine aspects of the work of the
department.
They can be employed in all departments in a local authority, including, for
example, housing, social services, education and planning.
filing and photocopying documents - producing and sending routine letters -
sorting, recording and distributing mail - dealing with petty cash and ordering
office supplies - updating and retrieving information manually or on computer.
Some clerical workers provide a secretarial service for a small team of local
government managers, producing their letters and reports, coordinating diaries
and arranging meetings.Local government clerical workers usually work 37 hours a week, Monday to
Friday.
Part-time, jobshare and flexitime work may be available.
The work is mainly office based.
There are many opportunities for clerical workers in nearly all departments in
local government, from building control to education and tourism.
Local government bodies employ clerical workers in every part of the UK, in both
permanent and temporary positions.
Promotion prospects for local government clerical workers are good.
Promotion prospects will be enhanced if further training and qualifications are
undertaken.
Salaries for local government clerical workers are usually between 12,000 and
15,000 a year.
Additional allowances may be paid to staff working in the London area and some
local authorities have performance related pay schemes.
