Bodyguard Those working for the state may be specially trained police officers or military personnel, often from the Royal Military Police or Special Forces. The majority of CPOs are self-employed on long-term or short-term contracts, which can be anything from a few days to months. A number of commercial firms and agencies offer close protection services. There are opportunities to specialise in surveillance, driving, residential security etc. There are also opportunities for more experienced CPOs to move into consultancy work. (Bodyguard). ( Employers include state and private organisations as well as private individuals ). Back to top

Coastguard All coastguards are employed by the MCA and there are over 1000 regular coastguard staff located around the British coastline. (Coastguard). ( Opportunities for promotion are from coastguard watch assistant to watch officer and then to watch manager or section manager and beyond ). Back to top

Diver They are employed in the offshore oil and gas industries, civil engineering and construction, marine and archaeological research, and film, TV and photography. Many of these opportunities are on a short-term contract basis, so you must be flexible and be prepared to travel to look for work. Diving companies tend to be centred around coastal ports and harbours. Opportunities are available to work overseas, particularly Australia and the Indian Ocean. As technology improves, more underwater tasks can be carried out by remote-operated vehicles (ROVs), so opportunities for divers are decreasing. (Diver). ( Nearly all divers are self-employed ). Back to top

Dog Handler There are not many positions, and there are usually long waiting lists. Promotion is the same as for any other role in the organisation. Exams must be passed to become a sergeant in the police, or a warrant officer in the army and RAF. (Dog Handler). ( Those above the rank of sergeant in the police and corporal in the Army and RAF would not normally work as dog handlers ). Back to top

Door Supervisor They may work directly for the establishment or on contract for an agency. In large organisations it may be possible to move into a team leader role and then on to an area supervisor position. Working as door supervisor may act as an opening into the security industry, for example retail security. (Door Supervisor). ( Door supervisors work in public houses and nightclubs ). Back to top

Merchant Navy Engineering Officer Consideration for promotion is based on length of service and on merit, together with possession of the relevant MCA Competency Certificate. Experienced engineering officers are in demand for both on-shore and off-shore positions, with production and process plants, shipping companies and nautical colleges. (Merchant Navy Engineering Officer). ( Opportunities also exist with overseas companies ). Back to top

Merchant Navy Deck Officer Around 20 companies sponsor cadets, a list of these can be obtained from the Merchant Navy Training Board The work and lifestyle on board ship will depend on the type of company, size and type of vessel, distances travelled and trading area. For instance, a cruise ship carrying holidaymakers may visit holiday destinations around the world. Oil tankers will travel the shipping routes between ports catering for industrial cargo. Consideration for promotion is based on length of service and on merit, together with possession of the relevant MCA Competency Certificate. Experienced officers are in demand for both on-shore and off-shore positions, with shipping companies, port authorities and other employers needing seafaring experience. (Merchant Navy Deck Officer). ( Some ships travel world-wide, whereas others travel only in Europe ). Back to top

Merchant Navy Rating There are around 11,500 ratings currently employed in the Merchant Navy. Opportunities to train as a rating are limited, with the exception of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary and several commercial shipping companies who train their own ratings. You can obtain a list of these companies from the Merchant Navy Training Board (see Further Information section). The work and lifestyle will depend on the size and type of vessel worked on, distances travelled and the trade area of operation. For instance, cruise ships visit holiday destinations. Oil tankers travel the shipping routes between ports catering for industrial cargo. Promotion depends on length of service, experience and qualifications, with progression to the ranks of leading hand, petty officer and chief petty officer. You can progress to officer rank through the Marine Apprenticeship, or a rating to officer conversion course. The Royal Fleet Auxiliary has a scheme whereby ratings may qualify as junior officers. (Merchant Navy Rating). ( Some ships travel worldwide, whereas others only travel in Europe ). Back to top

Prison Instructor In England and Wales, there are approximately 1,000 civilian instructors. That number is likely to increase as the prison population is rising. However, opportunities for prison officers to move into instruction and training are declining, as Home Office policy is to recruit more civilian instructors. In Scotland few civilian instructors are recruited as preference is given to recruiting prison officers with the practical skills or trades to teach inmates. Some may move up to managing a training centre or unit, or working in a head office. There has been significant growth recently in the use of private companies in prison work. (Prison Instructor). ( Instructors are generally recruited as grade 1 instructional officers and may be promoted to higher instructional officer ). Back to top

Private Investigator Opportunities for work have increased, as investigators are taking on more work previously done by the police. It can be difficult to obtain work with detective agencies without any kind of experience. It could be useful to try and get part-time or temporary work to build up experience. A list of reputable agencies can be obtained from the ABI and IPI. Currently, there is no overall control of the industry in the UK, but the ABI and IPI ensure firms adhere to professional standards. Agencies vary in size; with larger agencies promotion to senior investigator, or manager of a team of detectives, may be possible. There is also the possibility of working abroad - commercial piracy is an international problem and would present opportunities for travel. (Private Investigator). ( Private investigators are usually self-employed, run their own agencies, or work for an investigation agency ). Back to top

Police Community Support Officer The post of police community support officer is sometimes used as a stepping stone into other police staff careers, or can lead to tutoring new PCSOs. (Police Community Support Officer). ( PCSOs are employed and managed by local police forces across the country and demand is rapidly increasing ). Back to top

Police Constable Police constables may have the opportunity to specialise in one of the many specific branches such as the traffic police, the fraud squad or underwater search units. A High Potential Development Scheme (HDP) exists to enable talented members of police forces to take advantage of fast track promotion opportunities. Any serving officer can apply to join the scheme after serving the initial two years as a constable. It is particularly attractive to graduates as the selection process is fairly intensive and favours candidates with good educational achievements and strong leadership abilities. (Police Constable). ( The police service consists of 52 forces throughout the UK ). Back to top

Prison Governor There are currently 138 operational prisons in England and Wales, 16 in Scotland and three in Northern Ireland. The number of prison governors has remained stable in recent years in England and Wales. Scotland has seen a slight increase. Prisons are located all over the country in rural and urban areas. Male and female prisoners are usually housed separately. As a governor or operational manager you can be posted to any establishment in the country. Movement from one job to another is on merit by local selection. Staff moving into senior posts must first pass a job simulation assessment. (Prison Governor). ( Senior governors can have responsibility for several prisons ). Back to top

Prison Officer Opportunities for prison officers to combine their work with instruction and training are declining, as Home Office policy in England and Wales is to recruit more civilian instructors. In Scotland there is little recruitment of civilian instructors, so there are more opportunities for prison officers to combine their work looking after the security of the prisoner with instructional and training duties. Promotion to senior officer posts is by examination and interview after at least two years'' service. It is possible to progress from senior officer to governor grades. In England and Wales the prison service operates an Intensive Development Scheme for graduates, which offers early progression to senior grades. Privately-run prisons and security organisations are increasingly taking on escort and other duties. This trend is having an impact on recruitment and job opportunities. Contracted out prisons in England and Wales are listed on the HM Prison Service website. (Prison Officer). ( Prison officers are recruited frequently in England, Wales and Scotland ). Back to top

( The Royal Marines recruit 1155 commandos and 27 band members each year ). Back to top

Some security officers, once they have enough experience and knowledge of the business, run their own security companies. With experience, promotion would be to senior or chief security officer, then supervisor. With additional qualifications it may be possible to progress to security management or training.
