Private employment agencies in Germany are called Arbeitsvermittlung and are
listed in the Gelbe Seiten Yellow Pages.
Most German universities have a student advisory service Zentrale
Studienberatung and student advisers are primarily involved in giving
educational advice.
However, the student advisors and the Federal Employment Service work closely
together where possible.
Public employment services
The German equivalent of the Jobcentre is the Agentur fur Arbeit formally called
Arbeitsamt.
There are over 800 throughout Germany and their services are available to
European Union EU nationals.
You can access vacancies in Germany from the UK via your local Jobcentre and
your local UK EURES European Employment Services Network adviser.
You can also get contact details including e-mail addresses for EURES advisers
for a number of specific German cities through the EURES website.
University courses in Germany tend to be far more vocational with more emphasis
on course-related experience Praktikum than in Britain.
The student organisation AIESEC organises conferences for graduates at various
universities and Germany participates in the IAESTE international exchange
programme.
Within Germany it is useful to register with the local branch of Agentur fur
Arbeit for both permanent and casual work, as soon as you have even a temporary
address.
Generally, a UK Masters is required for postgraduate courses which require a
German university degree for entry. For doctoral research, a Masters or even a
German qualification is usually required.
A valuable source of information on both courses and scholarships for British
students is the German Academic Exchange Service - Deutscher Akademischer
Austauschdienst DAAD in London.
A UK graduate with an additional German qualification might be more valued by
employers. uropean Union EU nationals do not require work permits in Germany.
On 1 May 2004, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania,
Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia joined the EU. You should contact the
German Embassy in your country to see if any restrictions apply.
Residence permit - As soon as you have taken up work in Germany you must obtain
a residence permit from the local Foreign Nationals Authority .
Self-employment -The German Embassy advises that you contact the German-British
Chamber of Industry and Commerce.
