The Croatian economy has emerged from a mild recession at the turn of the millennium with tourism the main factor for improvement, but high unemployment remains the principal negative factor.
Damage to infrastructure during the war has also made economic development difficult, as have coalition politics and trade union insistence on strict employment protection.
Service industries, especially tourism, account for over 60% of gross domestic product.
Croatia's rich cultural and historical heritage and its attractive coastline and islands attracted over ten million visitors in 2004.

Manufacturing is generally heavy industrial, including chemicals and plastics, machine tools, fabricated metal, electronics, pig iron and rolled steel products, aluminium, paper and wood products.
The unemployment rate is high at around 13.8% in 2004, and with a high standard of education and vocational training see South East European Educational Co-operation, opportunities for immigrant workers are thought to be scarce.
Teaching English as a Foreign Language TEFL is one of the few opportunities for European Union EU nationals to find work in Croatia.

Gender discrimination is prohibited by law in Croatia, and the Croatian Employment Service is working on the improvement of working conditions, with help from its British counterpart.
See their website for more details.
Approach language schools directly if you are interested in teaching English as a foreign language TEFL.
Help can be found on The British Council website.

The British Council provides information on the development of working relationships between the UK and Croatia in a number of sectors.
For more information see the British Council Croatia.

There are no references to careers support in the websites of the major universities.

Public employment services
The Croatian Employment Service provides vocational guidance and counselling as well as labour market information through its local offices.
See the Croatian Employment Service website for more details.

Some opportunities may exist for voluntary experience in conservation and work with refugees.
See the International Directory of Voluntary Work for examples of projects.

Information on studying in Croatia can be obtained from the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports of Croatia website, the Southeast Europe SEE Online website and the EuroEducation website.

The Croatian higher education system is highly decentralised, but comes under the supervision of the Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Sports.
There are public and private universities, polytechnics and schools of higher education.
Generally the language of instruction is Croatian, but the University of Rijeka offers some courses taught in Italian.

Visas to visit Croatia are not required of European Union EU nationals.
However, anyone wishing to work in Croatia must apply to the Embassy of the Republic of Croatia for a visa.
Contact the embassy for an application form, which must be completed and returned together with passport, two photographs and details of the job eg a copy of contract, length of employment, type of work, location and full address of employer.
Your employer must obtain a work permit on your behalf. (Permalink)
