Airport Baggage Handler The largest number of opportunities are at London's two major airports; Heathrow and Gatwick, but there is also work at the regional airports. Many jobs are seasonal, to cover busy holiday periods. Baggage handlers may move on to supervisory work, and could become flight dispatchers, this involves overseeing all aspects of the turnaround of aircrafts. (Airport Baggage Handler). Airport Information Assistant It is often possible to gain promotion to supervisor or team leader posts, and then on to more senior positions within the airport. (Airport Information Assistant). Air Traffic Controller The area control centre at Prestwick, near Glasgow deals with flights in Scottish airspace and parts of the North Atlantic. A new control centre at Swanwick has taken over control of airspace in England and Wales. It is the biggest and most advanced air traffic centre in the world. Around 650 air traffic controllers, engineers and other skilled staff are based there. Opportunities exist with the Royal Air Force. After a few years experience as an air traffic controller there may be opportunities to move into training and assessing prospective new air traffic controllers. (Air Traffic Controller). Chauffeur Vacancies might arise with private employers, large companies or organisations, or alternatively for a companies that provides chauffeur-driven cars for special events, such as weddings. Customs Excise Officer There are frequent opportunities at all levels. From junior manager band 5-6 positions, it is possible to move into more senior positions and ultimately to senior civil servant. Firefighter There are 58 brigades in England and Wales, eight in Scotland. In Northern Ireland the Fire Authority oversees four commands North, South, East and West. There is fierce competition for full-time work and many more applicants than vacancies. There is almost always a national shortage of retained firefighters, especially in small towns and rural areas. Other separate fire services include the British Airports Authority, which provides fire brigades at airports, and the Defence Fire Service, which provides fire services to military and other MOD sites. Some large private organisations also run their own fire service. There may be opportunities with Her Majesty's Fire Service Inspectorate for experienced firefighters. Immigration Officer Assistant There has been a large and ongoing expansion programme within the immigration service. Assistant immigration officers are based at over 50 airports and seaports around the UK, and at the Channel Tunnel. As with most positions in the civil service there is a clear promotion route. Immigration Officer There has been a large expansion programme within the Immigration Service and it is still growing. Officers must be prepared to serve anywhere in the UK. As with most positions in the civil service, there is a clear promotion route and length of service and suitable annual assessments are important factors. Immigration officers can either be promoted to the position of chief immigration officer or they can move into the general grades for promotion to higher executive officer. (Immigration Officer). Security Officer The demand for security officers is increasing all over the country. They work directly for an organisation, or for a private security company, many of which are small, local firms. Lists of companies who have been inspected and approved are available through the websites of BSIA and IPSA. Some security officers, once they have enough experience and knowledge of the business, run their own security companies. With experience, promotion would be to senior or chief security officer, then supervisor. With additional qualifications it may be possible to progress to security management or training.
