Electricity distribution workers install and maintain the network that supplies
electricity from power stations to homes, industry and businesses. overhead
lines and pylon work - underground cable work - substation work.
Distribution workers conduct repairs in high voltage environments so they must
prepare safe access to their work area.
Their duties include: carrying out preventative maintenance and switching
operations - installing and dismantling equipment, eg transmission cables -
assembling or removing components - adjusting and configuring electrical systems
- inspecting, testing and diagnosing faults.
Experienced distribution workers may authorise the actions of others.
They normally work a 37-hour week which may include working some weekends.
Overtime and standby duties are likely.
It is strenuous work, involving lifting, bending and carrying.
Depending on the work, workers can be out in all weather conditions.
Work on underground cabling is often in trenches, often in cramped conditions.
Work on overhead lines is at height with safety equipment. As distribution
workers work with high voltage, conditions can be dangerous if workers are
careless or irresponsible.
Regional electricity companies employ electricity distribution workers.
Electricity distribution workers may be able to progress to a general
supervisory job usually on the completion of a level 3 qualification.
Experienced operatives can earn between 16,000 and 18,500.
Experienced operatives with a level 3 qualification may earn between 20,000 and
25,000.
