NHS Opportunity: General Practitioner

general practitioner Current Vacancies

2006-11-27:

A general practitioner (GP) provides medical care for patients in the community, diagnosing and treating illness, disease and infection. They see patients in their surgery or visit them at home.
A GP works in a team of health care professionals including nurses, health visitors, midwives, physiotherapists, dietitians, counsellors and others, as well as the administrative support staff in surgery.
GPs are responsible for running the practice, planning and providing treatment, and in England, commissioning health care from other health professionals.
Most patient records are now computerised.
Some GPs develop skills in specialist areas such as mental health, dermatology, diabetes, substance misuse or sexual health. Some GPs are beginning to use video links for patient diagnosis, especially in rural practices.
Full-time work for GPs is defined as 37.5 hours a week.
GP surgeries are generally modern and purpose-built.
There are over 40,000 GPs in the UK working under contract for the NHS.
Over 80 per cent of these doctors work as principals in GP practices.
The armed forces employ a small number of GPs.
Most GP practices use a deputising service for out-of-hours work and cover for periods of absence of practice doctors.
These deputising services employ GPs on both a full-time and part-time basis.
Some GPs may take on work outside the practice.
Others do advisory work for pharmaceutical companies, occupational health services, the Benefits Agency, as well as the police and prison service.
There are limited opportunities to work in postgraduate GP education.
Some GPs take on private patients to supplement their income. (Permalink)
