Chiropodist Current Vacancies
2006-11-27:
Chiropodists diagnose and treat a wide range of problems on the foot and lower
leg.
They work with other health professionals including orthopaedic specialists, GPs
and health visitors.
Ailments, diseases and deformities of the foot are diagnosed and treated.
Patients include: children with athletes foot and verrucas; elderly people with
ulcers, arthritis and problems caused by diabetes; athletes with sports
injuries; and pregnant women with problems brought on by weight gain.
With advanced training, it is possible to carry out minor surgery such as
removing bunions.
Chiropodists play an important part in educating the public about the importance
of healthy feet.
This can involve talking to patients and addressing groups, such as the parents
of young children.
Self-employed or private practice chiropodists may work unsocial hours to
accommodate patients wanting treatment outside their own working hours.
Chiropodists usually work in a clinic, which might be attached to a hospital,
health centre, or GP surgery, but may also treat patients in their homes. A
driving licence is useful.
Most newly qualified chiropodists work within the NHS to gain experience and
develop further skills.
The starting salary of a chiropodist in the NHS is between 18,800 and 21,100 a
year.
District Chiefs earn between 31,900 and 40,000, and Consultants earn up to 51,000.
A chiropodist in private practice may charge from 25 to 40 a session.
