Car salespeople sell new or used cars.

Duties vary according to the type and size of dealership, but may include: keeping the forecourt and cars clean and tidy; arranging advertising for the dealership; and telephoning prospective customers to tell them about new cars and deals.

Salespeople discuss the customers needs and advise them on the most suitable vehicle.

They arrange test-drives, negotiate and agree the sale price of cars, including any trade-in price for the customers old car, agree on financial arrangements, which may include cash payment or a car loan.

They also complete associated paperwork and pre-delivery inspection, delete cars from stock lists, place orders for new cars from manufacturers or buy in used cars.

In large dealerships, salespeople may work as part of a team specialising in one aspect of selling.

Car salespeople usually work a basic 40 hour week, between 8am and 6pm, this will usually include weekend working.

The work is normally based in showrooms and offices.
However, some time is spent outdoors, showing customers around cars on a forecourt, for example, or taking people out for test-drives.

Employers include franchised dealerships appointed by manufacturers to sell only new cars, as well as dealerships selling used cars or a combination of new and used cars.

In large dealerships, promotion to posts such as showroom supervisor, senior sales advisor, sales manager or dealership administrator is possible. (Permalink)
