            <description>2007-01-07: All applicants who apply for registration as a nurse and meet the NMC minimum requirements will now be required to undertake all or part of the Overseas Nurses Programme (ONP). The ONP is a new preparation programme for overseas trained nurses (those trained outside the UK and the EEA). The ONP will be compulsory for all overseas applicants and its core elements must be successfully completed before applicants can be registered by the NMC. The ONP is being phased in from 1 September 2005. It will be fully implemented by 1 September 2006.

Guidance on recruiting nurses from overseas
NHS Employers has taken assumed responsibility for promotion, advice and guidance of international recruitment (IR) from the Department of Health. The level of activity will reflect the needs of NHS organisations through regular liaison with the SHA recruitment leads forum.
NHS employers are normally expected to use established country to country campaigns to meet their international recruitment needs. There are currently two formal programmes available for trusts wishing to recruit a cohort of nurses:

Spain: nurses may be recruited under an agreement between Department of Health and the Spanish Ministry of Health.

This is particularly important in the Location section. If you enter South East the search has no way of knowing if you meant south OR east or south east.
